SOUTH Australia has many great companies with the potential to take on the world — but gaps in leadership and growth knowledge are holding them back.
That was the message at the AICD Leaders Edge SA Business Icons lunch on Friday 19th May from Professor Jana Matthews, ANZ Chair in Business Growth, Director of the University of South Australia’s Centre for Business Growth.
The good news for these companies and for SA is that the skills entrepreneurs, CEOs and executives need to scale-up their business can be learned. Many people start or lead successful businesses, but hit roadblocks as they grow. There’s a number of reasons for this such as lacking a growth strategy, hiring issues, or struggling with leadership responsibilities.
Understanding how to scale a company and go global takes experience, expertise, support and access to great mentors. Executives need to learn how to delegate, how to lead staff through change, how to find and work with the right partners. When an executive team understands the knowledge and skills required to accelerate growth and are given the right tools, they are much better equipped to make the right decisions quickly, seize opportunities, and rapidly grow.
“When selecting our topic for our Tomorrow’s SA Business Icon’s Leader’s Edge Lunch, we naturally gravitated to the UniSA Centre for Business Growth, as we know that the Centre’s Clinics and Programs help today’s business leaders take on the world. If we can help just one company to start their global growth journey — it will be a tremendous success,” said Carmel Noon, State Manager SA & NT, AICD.
