Rilow Group is comprised of several property development companies: Elderton Homes, Millbrook Homes and White Square Properties. The portfolio encompasses luxury homes, first-time homes and investment homes at affordable prices and property marketing for all the companies.

Why RILOW Group MD Richard Whitehead strongly recommends the ANZ Business Growth Program and Accelerate and Scale Programs:

“The information and knowledge shared in the Australian Centre for Business Growth’s programs are from people who have already ‘been there and done that’. It’s not all from a text book. Some of the most valuable lessons we have learnt can’t be found in a text book.”

The Challenge

Before attending our programs, Elderton Homes was a growing company, with year-on-year revenue growth and reasonable profit. But Richard wondered “how much better my business could be.”

Like most companies, the team had faced some difficult management issues as the company had grown, and Richard had a strong hunch that there were some key weaknesses within the company that needed to be addressed. When the Growth Clinic, part one of the ANZ Business Growth Program, was recommended to Richard, it seemed like an ideal opportunity to review the business and see how it could be improved.

The Approach

Richard left the Growth Clinic with a better understanding of what he needed to do, i.e., get the plan out of his head and down on paper, and communicate his plan to others on the team.

During the nine-month Growth Modules, Richard strengthened sales and marketing, integrated financial and project management software, began meeting regularly with the team to set growth goals and measure progress.

The Growth Modules and the follow-on Accelerate and Scale Program helped Richard identify the people required to take the business to the next level as well as those who were not performing at the level required to grow the company.

He also decided that, in order to reduce his risk, he needed to diversify the business, so he set up the luxury home building business, as well as the project marketing business and created the holding company, RILOW Group.

Once he and the team had all the pieces in place, it became easy to focus on the company goals and execute.

By the end of the Accelerate and Scale, RILOW had developed a solid growth plan for the next three years, was exploring several construction innovations, and was well on its way to success.

“It’s just an amazing program and experience that you will not find anywhere else. Jana is an inspiration and delivers her learnings in an easy to understand and practical manner. The Growth Experts who have different backgrounds are also very valuable resources.”

The Outcome

One of the key outcomes was the new, very strong, focused executive management team that shares the company’s values and has enabled the company to continue to accelerate its growth. While the company always had a strong culture, the programs helped the executive team identify several areas for improvement, particularly in the management team.

RILOW Group now has a three-year plan, which was developed during the team’s participation in the Growth Modules and honed during Accelerate and Scale. The company has learned to execute and had built an operational infrastructure that should enable it to sustain growth.

Over 24 months, the team has more than doubled (from 42 employees to 90 employees) with revenue and profitability increasing substantially.

“Not being tertiary educated in business, I knew I needed more knowledge in this area. I have gained immense knowledge and skills from the Centre’s programs. We have now implemented a new management team and a plan which we are executing. We have established systems and processes, and our culture is stronger than it has ever been. We’ve diversified the risk, and we believe we are now set up to continue growth and achieve even more success in the years ahead.”
